Taxes!

RISD is working to make paying your sales tax after each Alumni Art Sale a breeze. We’ll update this page with helpful information whether you pay your taxes quarterly or purchase a temporary tax permit for each sale.

If you are interested in applying for a ‘Permit to Make Retail Sales’ through the state of Rhode Island, please click here to apply online. Here is a PDF copy of the application if you’d like to review it before applying. The application is only $10.00 for the year and you can file quarterly by mail or online. The permit does take a few weeks to obtain so plan accordingly. Please call the RI Division of Excise Tax at (401) 574-8955 if you have any questions.

You can also purchase a $10.00 Temporary Tax Permit just for the day of the sale (this fee is usually sent in with your table payment). You’ll report your earnings and tax due for the day and turn in a check at the end of the sale. RISD will complete the paperwork and mail it in the Monday after the sale. If you’re in more than one sale a year, it may be worthwhile to apply for a ‘Permit to Make Retail Sales’ which you can use at any sale in the state.
